AMD’s new Ryzen 9 3950X has a suggested retail price of $749. If you don’t quite fancy spending over $500 on a CPU, check out AMD’s other great processors. The flip side of this comes down to motherboard support: some AM4 motherboards were not designed with high-power sixteen core processors in mind. Both Intel and AMD have been hard at work offering you their finest in raw processing performance. Earlier this year AMD pushed again, this time putting 12 cores in the market for the same price as 8, or what had been the 4-core price point only three years prior. It's a great result, but for Premiere users, it's not particularly clear cut, especially with far cheaper Intel HEDT CPUs just around the corner. When AMD launched the 12nm update of Zen, called Zen+, the memory compatibility issues were mostly all gone, of course, and with a move to 7nm Ryzen 3000, the 3rd generation Ryzen products, AMD is about to rattle the cages once again with a massively strong and competitive processor lineup. At higher frame rates in easier-to-play games, the AMD CPU is still fast, but in DotA 2 at least, Intel has a lead but only from the Core i9-9900K and above and often only once overclocked too, with the Core i9-9980XE managing similar frame rates at stock speed. It is jawbreaking when you think about what AMD has accomplished in, what has it been, two years' time? We did a visual inspection of all 35+ launch models. Pointless to benchmark this in every review, just like it's pointless to test 4k in all vid card reviews when nobody is using that either (ok, nobody here means less than 2%...LOL). Only the overclocked 9700K, 9900K and 9900KS were able to offer noticeably higher frame rates and the Ryzen 9 3950X stood head and shoulders above previous generation AMD CPUs too, with a massive lead over the Threadripper 2950X. Despite a couple of slower-than-expected results and lack of huge gains in games versus the rest of the Zen 2 CPUs in the graphs, The Ryzen 9 3950X is a monster. It managed to better every other mainstream CPU and by a noticeably margin, but both the Threadripper 2950X and Core i9-9980XE were quicker, with their high-end desktop platforms clearly benefiting the test in some way and Intel probably enjoying its extra Adobe optimization. Still not even 5% years later, heck, both added up don't hit 7% last I checked (month ago?). Overall, the 10900K has a 16% effective speed advantage over both the 3900X and 3950X. The Ryzen 9 3950X shocked us by pulling out slightly ahead in Cinebench R20 using a single thread. © 2020 Forbes Media LLC. You won't see big gains over other 3rd Gen Ryzen CPUs in games and most lightly-threaded tasks, but if you mix content creation with gaming and don't want to step up to a high-end desktop platform, it's currently the best CPU by far and the most impressive yet from the Zen 2 architecture. One thing I should mention, is that the Ryzen 9 3950X lacks a cooler in the box. From the manufacturer. Antony Leather. AMD has been consistently closing gaps, though, and Far Cry 5 barely sees any benefit by opting for Intel. This should make it the fastest AMD CPU in lightly-threaded tasks such as games as well as the most potent mainstream CPU in multi-threaded workloads too. They’re arguably HEDT chips, despite their targeting of the more mainstream sector, and their specifications reflect that. This test always seems to love AMD CPUs and the Ryzen 9 3950X extended the Ryzen 9 3900X's lead here with an unassailable score at stock speed and when overclocked. The Ryzen 9 3950X is built on AMD’s 7nm Zen 2 architecture, and is the highest tier in the Ryzen 3000 series. Otherwise, if a user is looking to do more professional high-compute work, then they look at the high-end desktop. Once overclocked, the difference was even larger, with the Intel CPU skyrocketing to a system power reading of 575W compared to just 340W for the AMD system. Should test LOADS of 1080p games, and maybe benchmark 1/2 at 1440p, only 1-2 at 4k if at all (should be done once a year or in a separate review of 4k yearly?). Even in 2016, mainstream CPUs used to top out at four cores: today they now top out at sixteen. Unless you are doing heavy video editing or video transcoding, then you are unlikely to really make use of those additional threads. Both Intel and AMD have been hard at work offering you their finest in raw processing performance. It wasn’t too long ago that this price range used to be the realm of AMD’s high-end desktop Threadripper processors, which started at 8 cores and we up to 32 cores. Surely Ryan is chomping at the bit now to tell me 4k is the new enthusiast standard...LOL. A chiplet design, X570 Chipsets. Enter round 2, and Zen 2. You'll need to buy your own and if you're spending over $700 on a processor that's hopefully not too much of a shock. Amazingly, considering its additional cores, the 3950X is slightly faster than the 3900X at gaming too, but only slightly. We’ll go into detail on the next pages. Intel’s published next generation hardware is set to be launched sometime in November, and with it a number of price cuts, however given the known differences between Intel’s current and Intel’s next generation processor line, the performance gain is not expected to be particularly big. But the tide turned with each month that passed, and over time more and more people would actually consider an AMD processor-based PC for their next purchase. TDP is the same for both chips, but note the lower base clock of the 3950X. First up is Samsung's 980 Pro, a perennial contender for the best drive on the…, @aik0uka 1st Gen CloudKey user here. It is worth noting that the price is likely to be higher at retail initially, as demand is expected to be high and stock levels haven’t been defined – given the popularity of the 12-core chip, it would seem that users wanting the mainstream platform always want the best. All the X570 motherboards we’ve tested recently are up to the task of taming the Ryzen 9 3950X.
